Doderer made his publishing debut in 1923 with his slender volume of poems entitled Gassen und Landschaften, published in the very small press of his friend Rudolf Haybach. The lettering cut especially for this first effort by Haybach and the title page designed by Erwin Lang, showing the characteristic silhouette of the author before a landscape intimated by expressive strokes make this slim volume a treasure and a great rarity, much sought after, within the body of Doderer's oeuvre.
This facsimile edition of Gassen und Landschaften is the opening item in the newly established series of special volumes in the Publications of the Heimito von Doderer Society. Beginning in 2005, these will be appearing at irregular intervals. The open-ended concept for this series, deriving impetus from the interests of Doderer readers, will make possible the publication of such varying formats as volumes of photographs and Festschriften, handbooks and reference works, but also posthumous editions and reprints, readers and anthologies. The decisive factor for publishing within this series is that the contents of the books would not achieve their appropriate effect within the regular and always more comprehensive volumes of the Publications themselves.
