At the center of the third volume of the Publications of the Heimito von Doderer Society stands the author's magnum opus, his most politically charged work, if not his best known, the novel Die Dämonen, which appeared in 1956 (The Demons - English version 1961). The opening contributions treat editions and analyses of the material and provide a look into the author's workshop during the two major phases of this novel's genesis, which lasted almost thirty years. Following are the papers presented at the third Doderer symposium of the Heimito von Doderer Society, which took place from May 30 through June 2, 2002, at Prein an der Rax, plus a series of supplementary contributions about The Demons and about the themes of country and city in the author's work. There is also a set of excerpts from the running debate concerning accusations of anti-Semitism in The Demons found in the forum on the homepage of the Society. Reviews and summaries of recently completed works or work in progress about Doderer close the volume.
