UpdatesAnnouncement (Sept. 6, 2008):The jury of the Heimito von Doderer Prize is awarding this year's first prize to Jenny Erpenbeck, an author born in 1967. The jury singled out for particular praise her latest work, the novel Heimsuchung, which appeared in 2008. The prize for a developing author will go to the Bosnian author Sasa Stanisics, who writes in German. Born in 1978, Stanisics is receiving this distinction for his novel Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert, which appeared in German in 2006 and in English in 2008 as How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone, translated by Anthea Bell. A special prize for biography will be awarded to Reiner Stach for his Kafka: Die Jahre der Erkenntnis, translated into English as Kafka: The Decisive Years, in a translation by Shelley Frisch. The prizes will be awarded on September 6, 2008, in Cologne. The Doderer Society views itself as a forum for all those interested in Doderer, and it works in cooperation with numerous professional organizations in the German-speaking world and beyond. The Society reports several times a year to its members regarding new publications, presentations, and activities. The Heimito von Doderer Society invites all interested persons to enroll as members. The regular annual fee is EUR 40,— (reduced rate of EUR 13,33 available; please inquire), and a sponsoring membership is EUR 80,—. Donations are gratefully accepted. (Because the Society is registered as a non-profit organization, donations are acknowledged through the appropriate government agencies.) And please note that there are no fees for payments from countries whose currency is the EURO. Fees are attached to payments from any other countries.
